Hello! I’m Andrew Henning.

Welcome to my personal website. I like to spend my free time with my wife and two daughters, as well as reading, learning, playing chess, and working on personal AI and machine learning projects. Although I’m American by birth, I happily reside in Glasgow, Scotland, where I enjoy the beautiful landscapes, temperate climate, and convivial locals.

Professionally, I’m a Head of Machine Learning who leads teams of statisticians, analysts, and machine learning engineers that tackle a variety of problems throughout the data science pipeline, from exploratory data analysis to modeling, reporting, and visualisation. Previously, I co-founded and led a team of ten specialist machine learning and data science engineers and researchers in the financial industry, but have since moved on to work in insurance, where I worked for a few years as a machine learning manager. My research interests include natural language processing and computational argumentation, but my experience in industry spans the wider breadth of data types, sizes, and modelling techniques. You can find out more about my background and work experience by checking out my CV.

Scottish Subterfuge Afoot!

15 November 2021

Apologies for not posting in nearly a week. It’s been a relatively rough time for the past few days, with the baby not getting enough sleep due to a cold, domestic responsibilities taking priority, and my feeling genrally lousy due to the diet taking hold. I’m glad to report that this last go around, as reported, would be the successful attempt after a gauntlet of false starts and excuses. I’m currently on day 7 but the build-up to get here was truly a chore.

There’s a Cold War in our house. Rather, there’s a Cold War out there and my household is just the latest front. As the greatest chef in our home, I do my best to provide fresh, flavorful, and nutritious meals for my family, from the tireless breadwinners and the voracious student at the top to our newest tiny recruit at the bottom. Despite my herculean effort, I’ve still been unable to dethrone our matriarch.

It’s been nearly a week after I kicked off the maiden voyage of my site’s “Projects” section and everyone’s heads are already spinning, save for my wife. I haven’t polled the audience, but the rollercoaster of new diet, stable morning and evening routine, and purposeful limiting of certain technology has spun, looped, and stalled. I’ve made promises of getting back on, exhausted convenient excuses, dallied, and delayed. But the one guarantee I haven’t scratched off the tin, however, has been to keep you updated on the whole ride – that was part of the deal, remember?

Don't Touch a Hot Stove

6 November 2021

Every family has its quirks. To exempt mine would be overly charitable at least and hypocritical at most. Marriage brings a lot to the table, but what most people overlook is that it fundamentally mixes two standards of practice and preference. I can’t tell you the genesis of this particular practice, but one very common argument in our house follows this paradigm: Person 1: “Should I touch a hot stove?”

The plan from the beginning was to do something nice for my wife and her NHS coworkers, but I achieved only half of that. I decided on Wednesday night, coming off the tail of a stressful workday, to conjure up a palette pleasing dish that she could take to work the next day. This, I hoped, would take my mind away from work and generate some much needed good will in the world.
