I never intended for it to work out this way, but my first day back at work coincided with the first honest go of my health project and the first day of November. The heavens align this way, I’m told, or perhaps we humans try to find patterns where there aren’t any. I warned everyone yesterday to expect a fog of grumpiness to roll across the website’s daily posts over the next few days, but I didn’t expect to still be under the worst of my daughter’s migratory head cold.

Although I’d like to block out a regular time slot every day to write these daily posts, there will come times like today when it’s more apt to wait, for today was one of those rare occasions where our family decided to celebrate with a traditional British Sunday roast dinner. Yes, it is Halloween, but here in the UK, this particular “holiday” enjoys much less attention than its American counterpart. Further, the last vestiges of lockdown and pandemic restrictions have all but guaranteed our local youth wouldn’t be pestering us with the typical trick or treat pan-handling.

It’s crazy how kids have different personalities right out of the box. When my daughter Sophia was born, the first thing she gave me was a brief smile and a squeeze of my finger as she lay on the examination table while the nurses tended to my wife. That attitude has only grown ever since. Fifteen months on her generosity really seems boundless. She’s figured out which shoes belong to which adult and will bring them over Even if you aren’t going outside.

Today concludes the end of my week-long annual leave break from work. To help out my American family and friends, annual leave is the term given to paid days off from your job. Here in the UK, there is a minimum number of annual leave days you’re entitled to by law, so there really isn’t much to compare it to back in the US, where, depending on your employer and contract, you can have little to none of what you would call “vacation days”.
